EZILLO/EZZA CRISES: GOVERNMENT TO USE THE DISPUTE LAND FOR EBONYI STATE COLLAGE OF AGRIC AND MINI BARRACK TO MAKE PEACE

The benignity of Ezillo made us to take all aliens as one but we never knew that the Ezzas are like lions among the wolves. we were caring for everybody without knowing that they were preparing war against us. Prior to the war proper, the Ezzas were having series of clandestine meetings against Ezillo. They had one time beleaguered our traditional ruler to an extent of beating HRH Eze Chima Onyibe (oke mmiri 1of Ezillo) and His entourage and also damaged his fleet of cars. This was a slap to to the royality of Ezillo, and also a splendid slur. The Ezzas had in several occasions sued my people to court on the cases that related to our own fatherland. They had also made series of petitions against my people to the government on issues related to autonomous community, holding major political positions, agitating for equal representation in the government. They had made succession of attempts to staple and retard the progress of my people using different means such as political power, diabolical means, and numerous ways. The Ezzas living in Egbirigba village had attempted to remove the signpost of Pope John Paul II Catholic Church bearing Ezillo inscriptions on it and to reinstate it with theirs. In Ugbonaa,village, the Ezzas had one time shot Mrs. Grace Ali “mama Fagin” because of land case. Also in the same village, they had had series of land squabbles with some of my indigenes Such as Abel Ebenyi, Mr. Linus Nweze, Mr. Sunday Ezenwachi, Late Hero Onyebuchi Ebenyi “on24” , Mr. Fagin Alinwaede, the Ugbonaa Eminence Club and Ugbonaa youths as a whole. In 1992, the then Chairman of Ishielu LGA, an Ezza indigene Felix Ereke used his power as chairman and ceded a large hectare of Ezillo land to Ezzas where they named “Ohagolede” which almost would have sparked the war since 1992. All these crises were all akin to almost all the other villages and parts of Ezillo. All these would have been the scenarios for the ignition of the war but my people always resorted for peace as a peaceful and accommodating people. These to an extent had made the neighboring villages to call us” the cowards”.

All these materialized on the 10th day of May 2008 following their concerted efforts, their covetousness, their iniquitous hearts, their hatredness, and their wickedness, which compelled them to clash with my people. Above all, we belong to the minority group unequalled to their large numbers, which they thought that a day is enough to scrape away that name “ Ezillo” – God’s chosen people like the Israelites.

On the 10th May ,2008, it was terrible, dreadful, deadly, vulnerable, and susceptible. At the early hours of the day, a smoke of war was hovering on the serene atmospheric nature of the day. The Ezzas were bustling like roaring and hungry lion looking for the Ezillions to devour. A situation that came so sudden and perplexed to my people.

The conflicts started when one Mr. Sunday Ali from Nkwuolu in Ishinmkpuma village of Ezillo, erected a phone boot on a piece of his uncle’s land located at the central market of Eke Ishimkpuma of Ezillo in Ishielu LGA. An entrance to Ezillo from Abakaliki the capital territory of Ebonyi state. A phone boot that was not up to a full sized room (9 by 9). This provoked the Ezzas who immediately descended on the small hut and set it ablaze and also to Sunday himself whom they gave several cutlass cuts. As if it was not enough, one of Ezillo guys who is a commercial motorcyclist got his motorcycle also set ablaze. The most irritating one was when Mrs. Grace Ali came with tears rolling down her cheek, sobbed with sorrows reported that her aged husband was forced inside their house and uninterruptedly got the house burnt down. Consecutively there were cries of Ezillo people from nooks and crannies of the whole community, Eguotahule, Okpochiru, Egbirigba, Amuhu, Amaleze, Umuzoke etc lamenting on the series of attacked unleashed by the prepared Ezzas against Ezillo. Suddenly, there were troupes of war-like-Ezzas heading to Ugbonaa village Ezillo with different weapons to attack them. We ran to reinforce ourselves for the attack that later resulted to serous casualties on our side owing to our ill equippedness due to the sudden attacked unleashed on us by them. The likes of Okafor Omebe ido, Abalifi Chinedu, Chigbo Abalifi,etc, received grave cutlass cuts. All these spurred my people for an attack because an adage says that “the best way to defend is to attack.” this was done instantaneously as we say our people’s blood gushing on the ground. the Ezilloians were pushed to the wall that the only way out was to fight back. At this point, my people routed for peace and were all turned to refugees to neighboring communities thinking that they were ready for dialogue. The government swiftly set a peace and a reconciliatory committee headed by HRH Eze Chibueze Agbo , Ogabe Idu 1 of Izhia. The committee promptly sworn into action. Their first effort was their mobilization of the whole community that made up the old Abakaliki bloc (Umu Ekumenyi) with the government who congregated at Ezillo for peace talk 28th of May 2008. Those in attendance were Gov. Elechi himself, Speaker Ebonyi State House Of Assembly, Hon. Nwankwoegu of Izhi land, Mr. Elias Mbam government Spokesman (SSG), Police Commissioner, Bar. Onwa ALI Onwa, chairman Ishielu LGA, All the Ekumenyi Traditional rulers, peace delegates from the two warring groups, the press, ladies and gentlemen from nooks and crannies of Ebonyi state. Certain ancient rituals were made by the traditional rulers to ensure peace but all these proved abortive as the opponents violated them.

The Ezzas who insisted never to obey the gorvernment has inflicted serious injury and agony to the people of Ezillo, the scentries and the passer by. Over five hundred Ezilloians, And people from IzhiaNgbo,Ngbo and othe neighbouring town were killed by Ezzas, three millitary men who were dispached for peace were also killed by the Ezzas. even the Ishielu LG Chairman, Bar, Onwa Ali was almost assesinated. This has disrupted peace in the state. The Ezzas suddenly forgot that Ezillo housed them for years and they resorted to pay them back with war because they have all it takes.

It could be recalled that the government of Sam Egwu resolved to build Collage of Agric in Ezillo but He could not complete the project till the expiration of His tenure. To maintain peace in Ezillo, the Government of Chief Matins Elechi has resolved to maintain permanent peace in Ezillo, the Government has resolved to seize the land for Ebonyi state collage of Agriculture and Mini barrack for soldiers. This is a welcome gesture by the Government to ensure a lasting peace in Ezillo.
